Hello! I'm one of the Masonry Calgary Pros. Living and working in Calgary almost all my life has been a blessing, but not quite the same blessing as living in Alberta, Canada overall. I always knew Alberta was a beautiful province worth exploring, but I haven't done much exploring yet, being so busy with my masonry company. But work took me on the highway recently and while shipping expensive exotic stone from Calgary to Kamloops I had a revelation. I kept it to myself until I got home, but now my revelation is here for everyone to read.
Maybe realization is a better word than revelation, but at any rate one of my dearest clients moved to Kamloops but wanted to continue working with me, and because he'd been such a great client over the years I decided that I would go down to Kamloops for a few nights to finish the driveway and retaining wall on his new home. So I loaded up my tools and a few pallets of exotic stone onto my truck and hit the road. Everything was going smoothly, and I was halfway to Kamloops when my truck broke down and led me to come to that realization/revelation I mentioned before.
There I was, parked on the side of the highway with smoke billowing out from under my hood. I didn't panic though. I called around for local mobile mechanics. I ended up calling this towing service in Kamloops, and they came all the way out to tow my to mechanic they had at their site, because the repair was too extensive to do on the roadside. But it amazes me because they gave such a great deal, were so friendly, and they came out so far - a 3 hour drive - just to pick me up. I rode with the company owner, Gord, in his truck on our route to Kamloops and he asked me about my Calgary masonry company and I told him all about what it was like being a stone mason in Alberta. We got along so well. It was when we stopped chatting for a moment, when I looked out the window and saw the amazing beauty of the Alberta/British Columbia landscape, that my realization struck me. What was that realization?
I always knew Canada had a reputation for kindness, but not everyone was kind to me growing up. I'm a hardworking, fully fledged adult now, working hard to keep a home for my loved ones, and so when kindness hit me it really hit me hard. A tear dropped down my face that day riding in Gord's truck, as I realized that being kind and helping strangers, which Canada used to be all about, is the best reputation a country could have, and the best part is is that it's totally still true. People here are so nice, so nice it makes me cry.
My shipment of exotic stone reached my client in Kamloops, I got my truck repaired, and the driveway and retaining walls were completed on time, but I owe it all the the random kindness of a complete stranger. Thank you, Gord! You and your towing business are angelic, and you've expanded my love for this magnificent country called Canada.
